Manly Beach Family Day

Salty air whips through your hair, the scent of sizzling prawns mingles with the faint strains of a Bondi-born indie rock band, and the iconic Harbour Bridge gleams in the winter sun. Forget the mid-July chill – we're bringing the sun-drenched spirit of Manly Beach right to the heart of The Rocks this year, transforming The Rocks Square into a coastal playground. Pack your sunnies (even if it's cloudy) and prepare for a day where the only challenge is deciding which gelato flavour to attack first.

What is it? The What's In Sydney Manly Beach Family Day is our annual contribution to making winter brighter for Sydney dwellers, a FREE, all-ages extravaganza bringing the laid-back, surf-and-sand vibe of our northern beaches to the historical charm of The Rocks. Expect a day packed with live music from local acts echoing the Manly Jazz Festival, engaging workshops for kids (think shell painting and knot-tying), pop-up stalls serving up Sydney’s favourite beach-side bites, and interactive games like giant Connect Four and beach volleyball. We’re turning one of Sydney’s oldest precincts into a temporary seaside paradise, complete with sand underfoot, all curated by your truly.

Why go? Because who doesn't need a dose of vitamin D (even of the simulated variety) in the middle of winter? This isn’t just a family day; it’s a full-blown Sydney experience designed to thaw the soul and spark joy. Picture your little ones mastering a new craft while you savour a cold brew from a local microbrewery, or challenge a mate to beach volleyball with the Opera House as your backdrop. This is your chance to reconnect with the relaxed, easygoing energy Sydney is famous for, all without the ferry trip. It’s perfect for families looking for free fun, couples after a unique weekend outing, or anyone who just wants to escape the usual urban grind. You’ll leave feeling refreshed, invigorated, and perhaps a little bit sun-kissed.

Need to know The Rocks Square is super easy to get to – jump on a train to Circular Quay and it’s a short walk. While it’s winter, dress in layers; the sun can be surprisingly warm, but the harbour breeze can bite. We’re kicking off at 10 am, and coming early is always a good shout to snag the best spots for workshops and avoid queues for those delicious fish and chip stalls. No need to book anything, just rock up! And yes, it's fully accessible; we want everyone to enjoy their slice of Manly in The Rocks.
