Taronga Zoo Junior Keeper
Remember that first time you saw the city lights sparkle from the ferry, cutting across the harbour towards Manly, a salty breeze whipping through your hair? Now imagine your little animal lover experiencing that same thrill, but instead of just admiring the view, they’re getting their paws dirty, literally, at Taronga Zoo. This July, ditch the same-old school holiday routine and swap screen time for lemur time, as your budding conservationist dives headfirst into the wild world of junior keeping.
What is it?
"Taronga Zoo Junior Keeper" is an exclusive, hands-on experience designed for children aged 8-12, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the daily life of a zoo keeper. Running on Thursday, July 2nd, the program, proudly presented by What's In Sydney, takes place at the iconic Taronga Zoo. Participants will spend a morning alongside experienced keepers, assisting with animal enrichment activities, preparing food, and learning about animal welfare and conservation efforts. It's a structured program that combines educational elements with practical, engaging tasks, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for wildlife.
Why go?
If your kids are constantly raiding the fridge for snacks or asking for new pets, this is their moment to shine. Picture their faces as they help feed a curious meerkat, assist in crafting treats for the sun bears, or learn fascinating facts about the native Australian wildlife that calls Taronga home. This isn't just a walk through the exhibits; it's a genuine opportunity to connect with the animal kingdom, sparking a lifelong passion for conservation. It’s perfect for curious minds, budding biologists, or any child who dreams of conversing with koalas. Plus, you’ll get major cool parent points for snagging them a spot in this truly unforgettable adventure.
Need to know
Make sure to arrive bright and early at Taronga Zoo's main entrance – aim for around 8:45 AM to allow time for registration. Comfy, closed-toe shoes are a must, and we recommend dressing in layers as mornings can be crisp, even in July. Don't forget a water bottle and perhaps a small, healthy snack, though a morning tea will be provided. Booking is essential and spaces are strictly limited, so jump online and secure your spot ASAP. The easiest way to get there is a scenic ferry ride from Circular Quay directly to the zoo's wharf.
