Australian Museum Dino Trail
Forget the usual Friday arvo stroll through Hyde Park; imagine instead a roar echoing off the sandstone of St Mary’s Cathedral, a shadow longer than a Sydney Ferry stretching across the Domain. This July, we’re strapping on our hiking boots for an urban expedition like no other, digging up prehistoric secrets right in the heart of our city. Get ready to swap your flat white for a fossil hunt, because the Australian Museum is bringing the Jurassic to your doorstep.
What is it? The Australian Museum Dino Trail is your free, self-guided adventure through Sydney's CBD, brought to you by none other than *What's In Sydney*. This imaginative outdoor exhibition transforms familiar city spots into a real-life Jurassic Park, minus the chaos (we hope!). You'll follow a specially designed map, tracking down augmented reality (AR) dinosaurs that pop up on your phone screen at various iconic locations. Using state-of-the-art tech, these digital beasts are rendered with incredible detail, allowing you to not just see, but truly interact with creatures like the mighty T-Rex and the towering Brachiosaurus, all against the backdrop of our beloved city skyline. Think of it as a treasure hunt where the treasure is meeting a Carnotaurus.
Why go? If you've ever dreamt of sharing George Street with a Stegosaurus or catching a glimpse of a Pterodactyl soaring above Circular Quay, this is your chance. This isn't just for the kids – though they'll absolutely lose their minds – it's a brilliant, free way for everyone to rediscover Sydney through a truly unique lens. Imagine the Instagram opportunities! Beyond the sheer spectacle of seeing these ancient giants brought to life, it’s a brilliant excuse to explore parts of the CBD perhaps you haven't recently, offering a fresh perspective on well-trodden paths. History buffs, tech enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a genuinely memorable (and completely free!) urban adventure will absolutely love stitching together this prehistoric puzzle.
Need to know The Dino Trail kicks off on Friday, July 10, running all day, every day through the school holidays. As it’s an outdoor, walking adventure, comfortable shoes are a must – leave the stilettos at home! Bring a fully charged phone (and maybe a portable charger) to maximise your AR experience, and download the free app beforehand to save on data. Access points are easily reached via public transport, with numerous train and bus stops throughout the CBD. It’s entirely self-paced, so go at your own speed, but allow a good few hours to complete the full trail.
