Bicentennial Park Picnic

Imagine the late afternoon sun painting Centennial Park golden, the scent of fresh cut grass mingling with the sea breeze drifting in from the Pacific, and the easy hum of families unpacking hampers. This isn't just any picnic; it’s an invitation to reclaim a classic Sydney afternoon, soundtracked by laughter and perhaps a cheeky kookaburra eyeing off your pavlova. Forget fancy, this is about pure, unadulterated summer bliss.

What is it?

"What's In Sydney" is throwing a good old-fashioned community picnic at the sprawling Bicentennial Park. Think less structured event, more open-air gathering of Sydneysiders seeking a relaxed afternoon. We're setting up a central meeting point with some oversized picnic blankets (first come, first served for these prime spots!), a few lawn games like giant Jenga and bocce, and a killer tunes playlist curated by our very own editors. It’s a chance for families, friends, and solo adventurers to spread out, enjoy their own food and drinks (or grab something from a local Bondi eatery beforehand), and simply soak up the atmosphere. No set performances, just good vibes and great company.

Why go?

Because sometimes, the best Sydney experiences are the simplest. Swap the scramble for a reservation for the easy joy of a picnic blanket and an uninterrupted view of the park’s mature trees. You’ll see kids attempting daring cartwheels, couples sharing whispered conversations, and new friendships blossoming over shared dips and jokes. Keep an eye out for the impromptu frisbee games and perhaps even a group singalong to a classic Aussie anthem as the sun starts to dip. This is for the soul-searchers, the family-focused, and anyone who appreciates that elusive feeling of truly slowing down in our fast-paced city. It's the perfect antidote to digital overload and a reminder of the simple pleasures that make Sydney so special.

Need to know

Bicentennial Park is super easy to get to, just hop on a bus heading towards Bondi Beach and you’ll find plenty of stops right near the park. Dress in your most comfortable picnic attire – think sundresses, shorts, and maybe a wide-brimmed hat. We recommend arriving around 3 PM to snag a good spot and bask in the afternoon glow. Don't forget your own picnic rug, food, drinks (no glass bottles, please!), and maybe some sunscreen. There are public toilets nearby, and the park is easily accessible for prams and wheelchairs.
