Powerhouse Late Night
Forget the harbour shimmer for a hot minute and tune your ears to the hum of something truly electric. On a Tuesday night in July, the Powerhouse, usually a sentinel of Sydney’s past, will come alive with the scent of spiced rum cocktails and a bassline that vibrates low in your chest. Picture yourself under the towering turbine, a neon-lit art installation reflecting in your drink, the hum of anticipation a new kind of city symphony.
What is it? This is Powerhouse Late Night, our very own curated after-hours experience at the iconic Powerhouse Museum. We’re throwing open the doors for an exclusive evening of art, music, and conversation, moving beyond the usual exhibits. Expect live performances from cutting-edge local musicians, pop-up art installations by Sydney’s most exciting emerging creatives, and interactive workshops that bring the museum’s incredible collections to life in unexpected ways. Think less dusty display cases, more dynamic engagement. We're talking a complete reimagining of the museum experience, designed and delivered by the team here at What's In Sydney.
Why go? Because sometimes you need more than just dinner and a movie. Powerhouse Late Night offers a chance to experience one of Sydney’s most significant cultural institutions through a fresh, amplified lens. Wander through the industrial grandeur transformed by contemporary art, discover your new favourite local band playing alongside a vintage steam engine, or get your hands dirty in a workshop led by an artist you'll want to follow on Instagram immediately. This is for the curious, the culturally inclined, and anyone who appreciates a perfectly mixed tipple with their art. It’s a night out that engages the mind as much as it entertains, providing talking points that'll last all week.
Need to know The Powerhouse is easily accessible by train to Central, then a short stroll through Ultimo, or jump on the light rail. There's no dress code, but this is a chance to step out – think smart casual with a creative twist. Arrive around 7 pm to catch the opening act and snag a prime spot for the first workshop. Booking ahead is essential for this one, as spaces are limited and we expect it to sell out fast. The venue is fully accessible, with lifts and ramps throughout.
